Perplexity Comet was prompted to complete a Coursera web design assignment and appeared to finish it in a short clip; the CEO told people not to do this.
A developer used Perplexity's agentic Comet browser on a Coursera course page. The only prompt shown was a short instruction to complete the assignment. Comet read the page and worked through what looked like a 45-minute web design assignment by itself. The developer posted a screen clip on X and tagged Perplexity and its CEO.
The 16-second clip shows Comet apparently finishing the whole assignment. The article doesn't say whether the work was graded or correct. CEO Aravind Srinivas replied publicly: "Absolutely don't do this."
Fortune cites security audits that found Comet can follow hidden instructions on web pages and complete purchases on fake sites without human checks, so supervise it closely.
Open my [course platform] course [course name] and find the assignment [assignment name]. Walk me through what it asks, summarize the key concepts, and draft suggested answers that I can review and learn from. Do not submit anything. Show me the draft and wait until I have read it and told you what to submit.
